IT’S OLYMPIC FEVER HERE AT SEELY!23 July 2021 (by admin) |
Here at Seely, we’re very excited for the start of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics today.
Years 1-6 have been learning about the Olympics all year from gender equality at the Olympics to racism to LGBT+ Team GB athletes. We were really pleased to hear that the representation of female to male athletes is almost equal at 49% to 51%. In the first modern Olympics in 1896, women were not allowed to participate.
We’re now REALLY excited that today is the day of the Opening Ceremony and even more excited that, because of the time difference, we’re getting to have a watch in our classrooms this afternoon.
We’ve talked to the children about a lot of significant moments such a Mohamed Sbihi being the first Muslim flag bearer for Team GB and representing us in the rowing. Alice Dearing is also the first ever Black woman to represent Team GB in swimming and will be in the 10km open water swimming event.
Other athletes and sports we’ve learned about are:
Team GB women’s football team, who beat Chile 2-0 on Wednesday morning and are playing Japan on Saturday
Max Whitlock and other athletes in the artistic gymnastics
The archery team
The cycling road race
Diving, especially Tom Daley
Hockey
Table Tennis
Jade Jones in Taekwondo
Shauna Coxey in climbing
Helen Glover in rowing
Dina Asher-Smith in sprinting
Carl Hester in equestrian dressage
Sky Brown in skateboarding
Joseph Choong in Modern Pentathlon
Adam Peaty in swimming
Laura Kenny and Jason Kenny in cycling
If you get a chance to watch any of the Olympic Games or Paralympics and talk to your children about the athletes representing Team GB, that would be great. The children have watched videos about the different sports and been amazed by the skills displayed by some of our athletes.
Good luck to Team GB and all the 376 athletes representing us!
